Protest Erupt In Edo State Over Alleged Plot To Impeach Philip Shaibu

Organized under the banner of the Peace Movement, alongside members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo North, the protesters gathered in Jattu, Etsako West Local Government, early Thursday morning to express their grievances.

Men, women, and youths participated in the protest, brandishing placards with messages such as “No to impeachment,” “We want peace in Edo State,” “Return the N500 million bribe to Obaseki,” and “Shaibu is our Next Governor, no going back,” among others.

Expressing their dismay at the impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly, the demonstrators urged lawmakers to refrain from any action against the deputy governor to restore peace in the state.

Spokespersons for the protesters, including Aminu Umosor, Gafata Emmanuel, and Hajia Anetu Momodu, vowed to mobilize support against the ruling party if the impeachment process continued.

They emphasized their unwavering support for Philip Shaibu and their commitment to the mandate given to him by the people of Edo State. They called for genuine dialogue and reconciliation efforts rather than resorting to impeachment.

The demonstrators issued a stern warning to legislators involved in the impeachment process, declaring that protests would persist until Governor Obaseki and the lawmakers embraced peaceful resolutions.

Meanwhile, Musa Ebomhiana, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, stated that efforts were underway to resolve the matter internally within the PDP, emphasizing the party’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
