REVEALED: Reasons For Obaseki, Shaibu Rift In Edo
Many political analysts had previously predicted that the relationship between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, might face challenges, especially with the latter’s ambition to contest for the governorship election of Edo State in 2024… CONTINUE READING
However, no one anticipated that the crisis between them would surface so soon, with over a year left in their tenure.
The conflict between Obaseki and Shaibu became evident when the Deputy Governor filed an affidavit of urgency at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court seeking protection from potential impeachment.
It was revealed that there has been a strained relationship between the two, mainly due to Shaibu’s aspiration to succeed his boss after their tenure expires.
Shaibu has been consulting within and outside the state about his gubernatorial ambition, but it appears that Governor Obaseki did not support his bid, possibly due to his own plans for the future of Edo North Senatorial District.
Obaseki’s supporters argue that the governorship should not be zoned to Edo North, as both Shaibu and Oshiomhole, the former governor, hail from that region.

They believe that Edo Central Senatorial District should be favored, and if it goes to Edo North, it should be Etsako West.
While Shaibu has been a loyal deputy and received various awards for his work, his ambition has reportedly caused discontentment from Governor Obaseki, who questions his political influence in Edo North. Obaseki has even expressed the desire to meet with stakeholders in the area to address this concern.
Some sources in the Edo government house believe that Shaibu’s move to approach the courts and raise alarm about his purported impeachment is a strategy to prevent such an action while he fights to retain his position and pursue his ambition.
However, supporters of the Deputy Governor defend his right to aspire to any political office, expressing disbelief that impeachment plans could be contemplated.
The House of Assembly members deny any plot to impeach Shaibu, with the Majority Leader stating that there is no such plan.
Meanwhile, Shaibu has filed a suit to restrain the governor and security agencies from harassing him and prevent any impeachment proceedings against him.
Overall, the unexpected rift between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu has brought attention to the political landscape in Edo State and has raised questions about the future leadership of the state.
