Rising Food Prices Challenge Access To Healthy Diets In Nigeria

The latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) highlights a concerning trend in Nigeria: the significant increase in the cost of basic food items required for a healthy diet. Collaborating with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, the NBS report reveals a staggering 96.2 percent rise in the national average CoHD, soaring to N938 per day in February 2024 from N473 per day in the same month of 2023. This sharp increase underscores the growing burden on households striving to maintain nutritional adequacy amidst escalating food prices.

The CoHD serves as a crucial metric for assessing food affordability and nutrition, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of various food items based on availability, price, and nutritional content to determine a financially viable option for a healthy diet. However, the continuous upward trend in food costs, as indicated by the 9.32 percent rise from N858 in January 2024, poses significant challenges to achieving dietary balance.

The report indicates that the CoHD is now rising at a faster rate than food CPI, reflecting broader economic challenges and the impact on households’ ability to access healthy diets. This trend is exacerbated by factors such as rising demand, higher transportation costs, and worsening insecurity, contributing to Nigeria’s headline inflation rate reaching 31.70 percent in February.

As a result, the number of people living in poverty has surged, with an additional 14.2 million Nigerians falling into poverty between January and November 2023, according to the World Bank’s Nigeria Development Update report.

The implications of rising food prices extend beyond economic concerns, posing significant risks to public health and well-being. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, stakeholders, and communities to ensure equitable access to nutritious food and mitigate the impact of escalating food costs on vulnerable populations.
