During a session at the Government House, the Council, joined by Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu, finalized the decision. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joseph Johnson, disclosed that the project will be financed from the state’s internally generated revenue.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, 30 percent of the mobilization fee has already been released. The project, slated for completion in 32 months, will promptly kick off with the contractor ready to deploy resources and manpower to the site.
Johnson emphasized, “We have awarded the contract to the tune of N222,114,563,830.2 kobo only for the commencement of the Trans-Kalabari Road. This is the main Trans-Kalabari Road, running from NSS Pathfinder to Aker Base Road in Rumuolumeni Community, spanning approximately 2 KM.”
He further elaborated on the route, highlighting its passage through swamps and multiple communities up to Tombia Town. The project’s funding, entirely sourced from the state’s IGR, marks the third phase of internally generated funds utilized for road development, without resorting to external borrowing.
Johnson noted the significant investment, surpassing that of the ongoing Port Harcourt Ring Road project, attributing it to the challenging terrain and extensive infrastructure required, including bridges, decking, and piling works across swamps and rivers along the Trans-Kalabari Road.
