Scheduled for Sunday, April 7, the showdown between the Algerian side, USM Alger, and the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) representatives, Rivers United, is set to unfold in the second leg of the Confederation Cup quarter-finals.
Following Rivers United’s 1-0 victory in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on March 31, 2024, the Nigerian club holds the upper hand. To secure their spot in the semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history, Rivers United merely needs to secure a win or a draw against the Algerian counterparts.
However, amidst the anticipation for the decisive match, concerns arose regarding the potential use of fireworks by USM Alger supporters to unsettle Rivers United during the encounter at the Stade du Julliet in Algiers on Sunday.
In response to these concerns, USM Alger issued a statement on their official channels cautioning their fans against the use of fireworks during the game. This preemptive action comes as CAF regulations strictly prohibit the use of fireworks in all its competitions.
The club’s statement emphasized the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and civilized behavior among supporters, urging fans to refrain from any actions that could result in penalties from CAF. USM Alger fans were reminded of their crucial role in supporting the team while adhering to regulations to avoid jeopardizing the club’s progress in the tournament.
With the ban on fireworks in effect, Rivers United gains a significant advantage going into the highly anticipated clash, as they aim to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup.
