Ryan Alebiosu Opens Up On Two-Year Battle With Knee Injury
Super Eagles defender Ryan Alebiosu has revealed how an unexplained knee problem kept him out of football for nearly two years during his teenage years, describing the period as frustrating and emotionally difficult.
The Blackburn Rovers right-back said the problem began when he was around 15, affecting both knees and making it difficult for him to run or walk properly. Despite seeking medical attention, doctors were unable to determine the cause of the pain or establish whether surgery was necessary.
According to reports, Alebiosu disclosed the experience during an interview with a British newspaper, explaining that medical professionals could not identify what was responsible for his condition.
“They did not know what was going on. I could not run. I could not walk. They did not know if I needed surgery or anything with it because I had pain in both of my knees and they did not know what was causing it. It was non-specific knee pain,” he said.
The 24-year-old explained that being unable to play football while other young players continued to develop their careers made the experience particularly challenging.
He said the uncertainty surrounding his recovery left him frustrated, as he could only wait and hope that the problem would eventually disappear.
Alebiosu added that the pain gradually subsided as he grew older, with his speed returning when he was around 18. His recovery allowed him to resume his football development and work towards a professional career.
The defender has since represented several clubs, including Arsenal, Crewe Alexandra, Kilmarnock, Kortrijk and St Mirren, before joining Blackburn Rovers in 2025.
Since moving to Blackburn, Alebiosu has made 50 appearances, featuring primarily as a right-back and right wing-back. He believes consistent playing time has contributed to improvements in his overall performance.
The defender, however, acknowledged the physical demands of England’s Championship, particularly the intense running required during matches. He said prioritising rest and recovery has helped him manage the workload and maintain his fitness.
Alebiosu has also progressed on the international stage, making his debut for Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on December 30, 2025. He played the full 90 minutes as Nigeria secured the win.
His journey from an unexplained knee problem that interrupted his teenage football career to representing Nigeria at senior international level highlights the challenges he encountered before establishing himself in professional football.
