In a tragic incident that occurred on Wednesday at the popular Eke Awka market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, one individual known as Igwe Omeli lost his life during a clash between rival cult groups.

The confrontation revolved around a power struggle to control the market.

According to reports, the deceased was believed to be a prominent figure within the Aye cult group in the market. The clash was specifically between the Baga and Aye cult groups.

The anonymous source from the market disclosed that the conflict was connected to market politics. Omeli, who was allegedly used by the cult groups to enforce their agendas, was pursued by members of the rival Baga group.

Seeking refuge in the market, he attempted to rally his own followers to protect him. Unfortunately, before his group could respond, he was caught and brutally killed. The assailants gruesomely beheaded him and mutilated his body.

This violent incident is not the first of its kind in the area, as the source mentioned a similar clash between the same rival groups a few weeks prior, resulting in another casualty.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident and stated that the police have heightened surveillance operations in the area. However, no arrests have been made yet, and the investigation is still ongoing. Witnesses’ testimonies are aiding the police in their efforts to uncover the perpetrators behind this disturbing act of violence.
