His release came several months after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his position as the chairman of the anti-corruption agency.

Bawa’s suspension was a response to serious allegations of misconduct leveled against him, as stated by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the SGF office, explained that this action was taken to facilitate a thorough investigation into the accusations.

In the aftermath of his suspension and his subsequent arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) on June 14, former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle also accused Bawa of attempting to solicit a $2 million bribe from him. However, the former EFCC chief vehemently denied these allegations made by the Minister of State for Defense.

While Tinubu appointed the Commission’s Director of Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkol, to serve as the acting chair of the EFCC, the Nigerian leader, on October 12, announced Ola Olukoyede as the new head of the agency.

Olukoyede’s appointment is initially for a renewable term of four years, as stated by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale. He further noted that this appointment followed Bawa’s resignation, and Olukoyede’s confirmation took place approximately a week later.
