Senate Issues Deadline: Finance Minister Faces Pressure Over N100bn Gas Project

The committee’s ultimatum, spanning seven days, was prompted by concerns raised over potential breaches of the Public Procurement Act 2017 in the handling of the gas infrastructure development projects. With plans underway to release an additional N130 billion to undisclosed companies, the Senate warns against further unauthorized expenditures, emphasizing the need for compliance with legislative oversight.
Previously commending President Bola Tinubu for the CNG initiatives, the committee urged prompt presentation of a supplementary budget to cover such expenditures, aligning with due process and accountability standards.
Fresh allegations from the “Good Governance and Transparency Front” underscored the urgency of the situation, accusing the Steering Committee of Presidential CNG Initiative of favoritism in fund disbursement and neglecting procedural requirements.
In response, Committee Chairman Jarigbe Agom demanded comprehensive records from the Finance Minister, seeking clarity on the award process, disbursement details, and the companies involved. The committee emphasized the importance of adherence to the Public Procurement Act 2007, underscoring the necessity of transparency and due diligence in public expenditure.
As pressure mounts and deadlines loom, Minister Edun faces a critical juncture in his tenure, tasked with upholding accountability and restoring public trust in government initiatives. The outcome of this inquiry holds significant implications for governance and transparency in Nigeria’s energy sector, highlighting the imperative of legislative oversight and responsible financial stewardship.
