Senator Adams Oshiomhole: A Beacon of Educational Empowerment in Edo State and Beyond
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the distinguished representative of Edo North Senatorial District, has long been a fervent advocate for education as the cornerstone of personal and communal empowerment. Drawing from his own journey—from humble beginnings in Iyamho, Edo State, where he completed local schooling before pursuing advanced studies in industrial relations at Ruskin College, Oxford, and policy leadership at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Nigeria—Oshiomhole embodies the transformative power of learning.
His philosophy, encapsulated in the sentiment that “education is the surest path to empowerment,” has driven initiatives that extend from skills training to scholarships, benefiting not only Edo North but the entire Edo State and influencing national discourse on youth development.During his tenure as Governor of Edo State from 2008 to 2016, Oshiomhole launched the iconic “Red Roof Revolution,” a statewide overhaul of dilapidated school infrastructure.
This ambitious program renovated hundreds of schools, replacing leaky roofs and outdated facilities with modern, durable structures to create conducive learning environments for thousands of students across Edo’s three senatorial districts. Complementing this, he invested heavily in human capital by training over 12,000 teachers, enhancing their skills to deliver quality education and addressing critical gaps in the state’s teaching workforce.
Additionally, Oshiomhole introduced free bus services for school children, a practical measure that eased transportation burdens for families and boosted school attendance, earning praise from students and parents alike. These efforts went beyond Edo North, fostering educational equity throughout the state and setting a benchmark for governance that prioritized youth empowerment.
Transitioning to the Senate in 2023, Oshiomhole has continued his legacy with targeted constituency projects in Edo North while advocating for broader educational reforms. One standout achievement is the commissioning of a state-of-the-art nine-classroom block at Ojah Comprehensive High School in Akoko Edo, completed within six months. This ultra-modern facility, equipped with VIP toilets and designed to alleviate overcrowding, has provided a safe and inspiring space for students, as highlighted by local parents who noted the shift from “cramped and broken classrooms” to a “clean and safe environment.”
In 2025, he facilitated specialized training in records management and electronic documentation for teachers across Edo North, equipping educators with modern tools to improve administrative efficiency and classroom outcomes. Furthermore, Oshiomhole has distributed school desks and supplies to institutions like those in Ogbida, ensuring students have the basic resources needed for effective learning.
