Simeone Backs Lookman To Bounce Back At Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has expressed confidence in Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman to rediscover his best form following a challenging start to the 2026/2027 campaign.

The Super Eagles star has managed just one goal in nine appearances across all competitions this season, raising concerns about his performances for the Spanish club. His recent struggles were further highlighted when he was substituted at half-time during Atlético Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Alavés.

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, Simeone acknowledged that Lookman was yet to reproduce the impressive performances that had previously made him an important attacking option for the team. However, the Argentine tactician insisted that fluctuations in form were a normal part of every footballer’s career.

The Atlético boss explained that no player could maintain peak performance throughout an entire season, noting that Lookman was currently experiencing a difficult spell despite his efforts to return to his best.

Simeone maintained that the Nigerian international continued to work hard in training and was determined to regain the attacking sharpness and dribbling ability that had impressed the club.

He also urged the 28-year-old to remain confident in his abilities and continue taking on opposing defenders, even when his attempts occasionally resulted in losing possession.

According to the Atlético manager, Lookman must resist the temptation to abandon his natural attacking instincts because of his recent difficulties. Instead, he encouraged the forward to keep pushing forward, take risks and trust in his ability to make a difference in the final third.

Simeone expressed optimism that the Nigerian would eventually overcome his current struggles, pointing to his goalscoring ability and attacking qualities as reasons to believe he could return to form.

The manager’s backing could provide Lookman with a timely confidence boost as he seeks to establish greater consistency and make a stronger impact at Atlético Madrid.

With the season progressing, the Nigerian forward will be eager to turn his manager’s faith into improved performances and more goals as he looks to silence critics and reaffirm his value to the Spanish side.
