Slovakia Govt Updates On PM Fico’s Condition Following Assassination Attempt

Fico’s Deputy, Tomas Taraba, informed the BBC that the surgery had gone “well” and expressed confidence that Fico “will survive.”

Earlier, it was reported that the 59-year-old Prime Minister was “fighting for his life” after sustaining grave injuries in the attack in the small town of Handlova. A suspect was detained at the scene.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estoka described the incident as a politically motivated assassination attempt. The gunman fired five shots at close range, hitting Fico in the stomach and arm. Following the shooting, Fico was rushed to the hospital and spent several hours in surgery “fighting for his life,” according to Defence Minister Robert Kalinak.
