South African Murder Rate Surges Ahead Of Election Showdown Ramaphosa
South Africa witnessed a spike in its murder rate, with nearly 84 homicides reported daily between October and December, marking a two-percent increase compared to the same period in 2022, as revealed by police statistics released on Friday…..READ ALSO
The surge in murders poses a challenge for the ruling ANC, which has governed the nation for three decades since the dawn of democracy and now faces a daunting electoral battle later this year.
Ahead of the upcoming general election, illegal immigration and pervasive crime have emerged as central political concerns, with opposition parties highlighting perceived shortcomings of the government.
South Africa ranks among the countries with the highest peacetime per capita homicide rates globally.
Police Minister Bheki Cele, addressing a press conference in Pretoria, disclosed that 7,710 individuals fell victim to murder in the final quarter of 2023.
Cele expressed concern over the 2.1 percent increase in murder cases during this period compared to the previous year, adding to the pressure he faces over escalating crime rates.
In a country plagued by sexual assaults against women and children, incidents of rape slightly decreased by 1.7 percent during the same three-month period compared to the prior year.
While Inanda, a crime-ridden township near Durban, saw a decrease in reported rapes, the majority of such crimes still occurred within victims’ homes, often perpetrated by acquaintances or family members, Cele noted.
