Soyinka ‘Mocks’ Obasanjo For Ordering Monarchs To ‘Stand Up And Sit Down’ (VIDEO)
Professor Wole Soyinka playfully teased former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent directive to traditional rulers to “stand up and sit down” at an event in Iseyin, Oyo state.
In a widely circulated video, Soyinka addressed some monarchs, assuring them that he had no intention of commanding them to stand up and sit down, eliciting laughter from the audience.
This incident stemmed from Obasanjo’s criticism of certain Obas in Oyo for allegedly failing to show him proper respect when he was called to the podium. He expressed his displeasure at their perceived lack of welcome.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had invited the former Nigerian leader to commission a project, but the situation soured due to the perceived disrespect from the traditional rulers.
Obasanjo’s actions have faced extensive criticism for undermining traditional institutions and showing disrespect to the Yoruba people. Nobel Laureate Soyinka, an Egba kinsman of Obasanjo, lightly joined in the critique in the recent video.
“My royal highnesses, I wish to assure you that I’m not about to bark at you to ‘stand up and sit down’. This is a cultured gathering,” Soyinka said in the video.
Meanwhile, Obasanjo has stood by his actions in Oyo, following an apology offered by his estranged wife, Taiwo, on his behalf. This development has further strained their relationship, leading to exchanges of unkind words in recent statements.
