State-Medical Association Declines-Participation In Nationwide-Strike (Details)
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) branch in Kano State has opted out of the ongoing nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Medical professionals in the city affirmed their commitment to providing services despite the labor strike affecting various sectors.
Numerous establishments, including banks, hospitals, airports, and government offices, have been shut down nationwide due to the indefinite strike initiated by organized Labour. The strike aims to push for the implementation of the N494,000 Minimum Wage by the Federal Government.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had expressed concerns about meeting the N494,000 minimum wage demand, citing potential economic repercussions and impacts on the welfare of millions of Nigerians.
Despite efforts by the National Assembly leadership to avert the strike, union affiliates mobilized extensively, leading to widespread participation.
However, the Secretary of the NMA in Kano, Dr. Abdurrahman Ali, clarified that the NMA operates independently from the NLC and will not partake in strike actions.
“All doctors and medical practitioners will be on duty at their various hospitals. This may not be 100 per cent, but we are not part of it. Our members are on the ground,” Dr. Ali stated.
Earlier reports indicated that patients at some public hospitals were stranded as most units were providing skeletal services.
