Subsidy Removal: Govt To Pay Workers N10,000, Asks Private Sector To Follow Suit

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State believes that his government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy and provide N10,000 cash payments to civil service workers and pensioners will help alleviate hardships and set an example for similar interventions in the private sector.

This payment is part of the palliatives recently introduced by his administration, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration in his May 29 inaugural address that “fuel subsidy is gone.” As a result of the policy, fuel prices skyrocketed from around N185 to as high as N617 last week, leading to increased transportation costs and food prices, and forcing many to resort to trekking long distances.

Governor Abiodun clarified during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the cash payment intervention would not extend to the private sector since they are not under the government’s purview.

However, he mentioned other provisions introduced on Monday, such as the conversion of commercial vehicles’ engines from petrol (Premium Motor Spirit – PMS) to the more economical Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which will positively impact as many people in the private sector as possible.

The decision to pay N10,000 to civil service workers and pensioners was reached after extensive discussions with the state chapters of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). The payment will be made over the next three months initially, benefiting approximately 74,000 civil servants and pensioners in Ogun State. Considering that each worker or pensioner supports about three to four dependents, around 280,000 individuals will be directly and indirectly affected by this cash transfer.

Governor Abiodun clarified that although this group represents less than 10 percent of Ogun State’s population, the objective was to start this immediate intervention, expecting the private sector to follow suit and help their affected workers cope with the fuel subsidy removal.
