During the budget defense session for the Ministry of Solid Minerals in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals, made a startling claim.

He alleged that certain influential Nigerians involved in illegal mining activities are contributing to the funding of banditry and terrorism within the country.

This revelation was disclosed as he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals to discuss the ministry’s 2024 budget.

In addition to pointing out the involvement of powerful individuals, Alake also expressed concern about the participation of foreigners in illicit mining operations within Nigeria.

He called upon the Federal Government to give close attention to the mining sector, emphasizing its significant potential to contribute trillions to the country’s annual revenue.

Furthermore, Alake highlighted the concerning expansion of militants’ presence beyond their traditional northeast base.

These militants have established themselves in northwest and central Nigeria, areas where they have not traditionally been active. Over the past 13 years, these insurgents have been waging a relentless insurgency in the northeast.

The consequences of their presence in new territories include terrorizing local communities through village raids, killings, kidnappings for ransom, and the destruction of homes through looting and arson.

The Minister’s statements underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the intertwined issues of illegal mining, terrorism, and banditry in Nigeria.
