1. Birth: Ghali Umar Na’Abba was born into the family of a businessman in Tundun Wada, Kano State, on September 27, 1958. His father, Alhaji Umar Na’Abba, was an Islamic scholar who instilled in him virtues of hard work, entrepreneurship, and strong religious inclination.
2. Education: Na’Abba attended Jakara Primary School, Kano, and later went to Rumfa College, Kano, for his West African School Certificate. He gained admission to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1976, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1979. He completed a postgraduate program on Leadership and Good Governance at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in 2004.
3. Business Life: After completing his National Youth Service, Na’Abba joined his father’s companies in 1980, engaging in various sectors such as importation, manufacturing, and publishing.
4. Politics: Na’Abba became politically active as an executive committee member of the ABU chapter of the People’s Redemption Party during his time as a Political Science student. He later joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998 and won the April 1999 National Assembly election to represent Kano Municipal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
5. Leadership Role: Na’Abba initially conceded the position of Speaker to Ibrahim Salisu Buhari but later assumed the role when the House collectively reached a consensus. He served as Speaker during the Fourth Republic.
6. Election Loss: In 2003, Na’Abba sought re-election on the platform of PDP but lost, a setback attributed to political maneuvering aimed at preventing his re-election as Speaker due to his popularity in the House.
7. Conferences and Seminars: Na’Abba participated in various international seminars and conferences on politics, parliament, development, and good governance, presenting papers and sharing insights.
8. Honours: He received numerous awards, including the National Honors Award of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010.
