This information was shared in a statement from Celestine Toruka, Deputy Director and Head of Media and Public Relations, and posted on the Commission’s official X account, #NGChrisPilgComm.
In the statement, it was noted that Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, encouraged pilgrims to view their journey as a chance to strengthen their faith in God.
He highlighted that the theme for the 2024 pilgrimage, “Pilgrimage of Renewed Hope for Total Restoration,” reflects the vision and goals of his administration.
The president also warned pilgrims against absconding while in the Holy Land, emphasizing that there is no place like home. He urged them to pray for the progress of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
The statement read, “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT, launched the 2024 main Christian pilgrimage to Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on December 22, 2024, at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.”
Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume @SGFAkume, the president stressed the importance of prayer and the sanctity of religion. He urged intending Christian pilgrims to see their pilgrimage as an opportunity to deepen their faith in God.
He reiterated that the theme of the 2024 NCPC main pilgrimage, “Pilgrimage of Renewed Hope for Total Restoration,” is relevant and aligned with the objectives of his administration, urging pilgrims to pray for the welfare of Nigeria, Lagos State, and their families. He reminded them that absconding in the Holy Land is not acceptable, emphasizing that Nigeria is their homeland and that there truly is no place like home.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the NCPC, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, in his welcome address, mentioned that this pilgrimage marks his first as the fourth substantive Secretary of the Commission. Adegbite acknowledged the challenges he has faced since taking office on February 5, 2024, but reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring smooth pilgrimages to sacred sites worldwide as prescribed by the NCPC 2007 enabling Act of the National Assembly.
He urged the intending pilgrims to exhibit exemplary conduct during the pilgrimage, describing it as a time for humility, devotion, and respect. He assured them of the high-quality services provided by the Commission’s partners.
The statement also cautioned against absconding, with Adegbite stating that the Commission takes such behavior seriously and that anyone found doing so, along with their guarantors, would face consequences, including being publicly blacklisted in national newspapers.
He expressed gratitude to the president for fostering an environment conducive to thriving pilgrimages in Nigeria and for his exceptional support for the Commission.
The statement concluded that the first batch of 260 intending pilgrims from Lagos State has already been airlifted, along with a total of 350 officials and pilgrims on the flight.
