In a tweet, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Akeredolu “finally lost the battle with a ravaging illness.”

Rotimi Akeredolu reportedly passed away due to leukemia and prostate cancer. The Ondo State governor, who had been battling illness, returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany.

In December, his health deteriorated, leading him to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on December 13. The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Olateju, referred to the governor’s ailment as “somatic” during a recent TV interview.

As of now, the Ondo State government has not officially addressed Akeredolu’s death, and members of the cabinet have not been available for comment. A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State revealed that preparations were underway to swear in Aiyedatiwa as the new governor.
