As of Tuesday, 6th February 2024, the black market players in Lagos were buying a dollar for N1490 and selling at N1500, according to sources at Bureau De Change (BDC). This spike in the black market rate underscores the volatility and uncertainty surrounding forex trading in Nigeria.

Despite the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s stance against the parallel market, individuals continue to flock to these unregulated exchanges, seeking better rates amid economic uncertainties.

Official Market Trends Downward:

In contrast, the official forex market witnessed a significant increase in transaction volume, reaching a staggering $584 million, as reported by the FMDQ Exchange. However, this surge in liquidity coincided with a depreciation of the naira against the dollar.

The exchange rate at the official market closed at N1433 to a dollar on Tuesday, marking a decline from the previous rate of N1419 to a dollar recorded on Monday. This downward trend raises concerns about the stability of the naira and its impact on the broader economy.

Market Uncertainties Persist:

While official channels attempt to bolster liquidity and stabilize exchange rates, the black market continues to thrive, reflecting the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s forex market.

Investors and traders must navigate through these turbulent times, mindful of the varying rates and risks associated with different exchange platforms. The fluctuating exchange rates underscore the need for prudent financial management and risk mitigation strategies in an environment plagued by currency volatility.
