Tompolo’s Firm Reacts To Navy Claims On Intercepted Vessel
The Nigerian Navy and Tantita Security Services Limited, a private security company led by Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), are in disagreement over the port of discharge for a vessel suspected of oil theft…CONTINUE READING
On Wednesday, Tantita Security Services claimed that they intercepted the MT Praisel, a vessel carrying suspected stolen crude oil in the Koko area of Delta state.
The vessel was flying a Togolese flag and was escorted by a navy boat led by a senior naval commander.
In response, the Nigerian Navy spokesperson, Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, cautioned against assuming the oil was stolen until laboratory tests and investigations are completed. He stated that the vessel had approval from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the navy was awaiting the results of tests and investigations.
However, Tantita Security Services, in a statement on Sunday, acknowledged the NMDPRA’s approval for the MT Praisel but questioned the discrepancy in the port of discharge. According to their intelligence report, the vessel was supposed to sail to Lagos but the master of the vessel showed that it was heading to Bonny instead. The company requested naval clearance for the vessel, but the documentation did not show Bonny as the port of discharge.
Tantita requested further clarification from the crew and permission to take cargo samples, which led to the navy personnel on board requesting the Tantita team to disembark. The matter was escalated to higher authorities, and the vessel was ordered to anchor off Escravos for further investigation.
Tantita raised questions about the different port of discharge information from the NMDPRA approval, navy clearance, and the naval press statement. They called for a single clearing house for all approvals to ensure transparency among government agencies.
