The unfortunate incident occurred on the evening of February 6th when four individuals in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area, attempted to create a herbal drink by combining various fruits and roots.

Reportedly, the youths in the community mixed Gegemu and Roots to produce the concoction in hopes of experiencing a high.

Regrettably, the experiment resulted in the demise of a 62-year-old man, affectionately known as Okiribo, and a 45-year-old named Samuel Omo-Folorunsho. Meanwhile, Shola Pempe and another youth were rushed to ECWA hospital, Makutu, for treatment.

The traditional ruler, Oba Moses Etombi, Agbana of Isanlu, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, labeling it as “tragic” and “very unfortunate.” He noted that the community was in mourning, shocked that herbs traditionally used for treating ailments could lead to such tragic consequences.

According to Oba Moses Etombi, the victims consumed over two liters of the concoction, resulting in severe health complications.

SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the Kogi Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, urging youths to steer clear of dangerous substances.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with experimenting with herbal mixtures and underscores the importance of caution and awareness regarding substance consumption.
