Trump Secures Nearly $92M Bond In E. Jean Carroll Defamation Case
Former US President Donald Trump has successfully posted a bond of $91.63 million as he appeals a Manhattan jury’s defamation judgment against him in the case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll…..READ ALSO Trump Dominates Republican Primaries, Secures Victory In 12 States
By posting this bond, Trump aims to halt the enforcement of the penalty while he challenges the verdict issued in January at the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Trump was ordered to pay this substantial sum after being found liable for repeatedly defaming Carroll. The defamation stemmed from Trump’s dismissal of Carroll’s sexual assault allegation, branding her as a fabricator seeking publicity. The bond, underwritten by insurance company Chubb, was signed by Trump and covers the appeal of the $83.3 million judgment, as per the terms.
Chubb, in a statement, refrained from discussing the specifics but highlighted the routine nature of providing appeal bonds in the justice system.
Trump faces a deadline of March 25 to post an additional $454 million in the civil fraud case brought by the New York attorney general.
In Carroll’s case, Trump contends that the jury’s award is excessive and seeks a reduction. Conversely, Carroll’s legal team advocated for significant damages to deter Trump from further defamatory conduct.
Aside from these legal battles, Trump also grapples with mounting legal expenses stemming from four criminal trials while concurrently navigating a potential bid for another presidential term.
