UBA Cracks Down on False Divorce Rumour About Tony Elumelu — Three Arrested

What began as a viral social media whisper has now collided with institutional force.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has moved decisively to shut down a false and damaging report alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, had divorced his wife — a claim the bank describes as entirely fabricated, malicious, and without any basis.

In a strongly worded formal notice, UBA stated that the publication and similar content circulating online are deliberate falsehoods designed to mislead the public and cause reputational harm.

But this is far from a routine rebuttal.

The bank confirmed that the matter has been escalated to law enforcement authorities, with three individuals already arrested in connection with the creation and dissemination of the false report. Those identified include Mr. Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Mr. Chigozie Success Ihebom, and Mr. John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky). Investigations are ongoing and are expected to lead to further arrests and prosecutions of all parties involved in originating or amplifying the claims.

In addition, UBA has issued a firm directive to all individuals, platforms, and entities engaged in the publication or redistribution of the content to immediately cease and desist. The bank specifically called for the removal of the offending material across all platforms and urged parties to preserve relevant digital records, including communications and metadata, pending further legal action.

Failure to comply, the statement warned, will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and other remedies available under applicable law.

The development highlights a growing shift in how major institutions are responding to misinformation in the digital age — moving beyond denials to decisive legal enforcement.
