Kainerugaba, aged 48, is widely seen as a possible successor to his father and has previously stirred controversy with his public statements.
A statement from the Defence Ministry confirmed his appointment, stating that he replaces Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, who has been reassigned as a junior minister.
This move follows Museveni’s decision in 2022 to remove his son from his position as commander of Uganda’s land forces, prompted by Kainerugaba’s provocative comments on social media.
Kainerugaba has attracted attention in the past by making remarks about invading neighbouring Kenya and expressing support for Russian President Vladimir Putin during the conflict in Ukraine.
Despite legal restrictions prohibiting active military officers from engaging in politics in Uganda, Kainerugaba has been vocal on social media, often participating in political discussions and debates with opposition figures.
As Museveni approaches nearly four decades in power, speculation about a succession plan has intensified, with Kainerugaba frequently mentioned as a potential heir.
