WAFCON 2026: Three Quarter-Final Clashes Confirmed As Super Falcons Crush Egypt

Three quarter-final fixtures for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been confirmed following the conclusion of Group C matches, with Nigeria advancing to the knockout stage alongside Ivory Coast, Algeria, Morocco, South Africa and tournament debutants Malawi.

According to Ireporter Online, hosts Morocco will take on defending runners-up South Africa in one of the quarter-final clashes scheduled for Saturday, August 8, while Ivory Coast will battle Algeria earlier the same day.

Defending champions Nigeria will face Cameroon in the last eight on Sunday, August 9, with the Indomitable Lionesses expected to finish as Group D winners. Meanwhile, Malawi will play either Mali or Ghana after securing a historic qualification to the knockout phase in their maiden WAFCON appearance.

Nigeria sealed their place in the quarter-finals after an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt in Rabat on Wednesday. However, the Super Falcons had to wait for the outcome of the simultaneous Group C encounter between Malawi and Zambia before confirming their qualification.

Heading into the final group matches, Nigeria had one win and one defeat and needed maximum points against an already eliminated Egyptian side while relying on favourable tie-break outcomes.

Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Zambia had taken an early lead against Malawi, leaving Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi level on six points at one stage of the evening.

The group standings shifted several times as Zambia extended their lead and Malawi responded through Tabitha Chawinga, creating a tense race for the qualification spots.

Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu, Christy Ucheibe, captain Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Joy Omewa all found the net for Nigeria, while Egypt scored twice in an entertaining contest that ended 6-2 in favour of the Super Falcons.

Following Zambia’s 2-1 victory over Malawi, tie-break calculations confirmed Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals, while the Copper Queens were eliminated despite claiming all three points.

The final quarter-final pairing will be confirmed after Thursday’s Group D fixtures involving Cameroon against Cape Verde and Mali against Ghana.
