What To Know As Lieutenant Colonel Emerges First Army Professor At NDA

Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar-Surajo Imam has made history as the first serving officer in the Nigerian Army to be honored with the title of professor.

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) conferred the title of Professor of Mechatronics Engineering on Imam, who also serves as the Head of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering.

The Registrar of the Academy, Brigadier General A.M Tukur, revealed that the promotion of Lieutenant Colonel Imam was officially ratified during the NDA Council Meeting in September, and it became effective from October 1, 2022.

The decision of the Academy’s Council reflects their confidence in Imam’s contributions to the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and acknowledges his exemplary service and commitment to excellence in his field.

Professor Imam, originally from Kankia in Katsina State, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano State. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in Mechatronics from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Mechatronics and Robotics from the same university.

Imam began his military career by joining the Nigerian Army as part of Short Service Combatant Course 32, initially assigned to the Nigerian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Over the course of his military service, he converted to Regular Commission and served in various units, including 1 Base Workshop, Technical Group EME, HQ Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps, and Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Beyond his military duties, Professor Imam is actively involved in serving as an Examiner and Member of the Central Selection Committee for Master’s and Ph.D. candidates sponsored by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.
