The Senate has modified its standing orders to prohibit first-term Senators from running for the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President.

This amendment, which took place during Tuesday’s legislative session, involved the alteration of Rule 3(2) (1-3) of the Senate Standing Orders. The motion for this adjustment was initiated by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

Following this modification, first-term Senators are now ineligible to compete for the roles of presiding officers in the upper chamber.

The amended Rule 3 of the Senate Standing Orders now specifies that any Senator aspiring to vie for the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President must have completed at least one term in the Senate.

This move by the Senate is likely a response to the leadership conflict that occurred before the swearing-in of lawmakers in the 10th Senate a few months ago, when first-term Senator Abdulaziz Yari contested against Senator Godswill Akpabio for the position of Senate President.

Additionally, the Senate has made revisions to its rules, establishing an additional nine Standing Committees. Currently, the Senate comprises a total of 74 Standing Committees.
