Why Assembly Complex Was Demolished – Rivers Government
On Wednesday, the Rivers State Government clarified that the renovation of the State House of Assembly Complex was undertaken based on the recommendations of consultants who deemed the building uninhabitable.

The decision to demolish and restructure the complex was influenced by a recent fire incident that affected the chambers and the necessity to fortify the longstanding structure. Joe Johnson, the Commissioner for Information, conveyed this information on the sidelines of the 2024 budget presentation at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
He mentioned that the government aims to expedite the renovation process.

The state government orchestrated the demolition of the complex under tight security, approximately two months after a fire incident had damaged the structure.
The demolition began at around 6:45 am, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara leading a convoy, including about 10 bulldozers transported on heavy-duty flatbed lorries, into the Assembly premises.
Security measures along Moscow road were stringent, with both sides of the road completely cordoned off and blocked to vehicular traffic. Unlike the events of October 30, there was no repetition of the governor being tear-gassed, as the police allowed foot traffic in and out of the street.

In the midst of these developments, Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu convened a security meeting at the Command headquarters, with a promised briefing later in the day. Most facilities on Moscow road remained open amid the security measures.
Additionally, Governor Fubara presented the N800 billion 2024 budget estimates to the Edison Ehie-led group at the Government House simultaneously with the demolition. Edison Ehie had been legally recognized as the Speaker of the House by the court, while the court restrained Martins Amaewhule from portraying himself as the speaker.
The budget presentation took place in a hall at the Government House, ostensibly due to the “renovation” work at the state assembly complex that commenced on Wednesday morning.
