Dewan addressed the controversy surrounding the exclusion of seven APC members during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, emphasizing that the decision was based on procedural requirements rather than political bias.

According to Dewan, the exclusion of the seven APC members was due to incomplete procedural requirements on their part. He explained that the proper procedures for their inauguration had not been fulfilled, citing the absence of communication from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or the Certified True Copies (CTC) of the court judgments.

Dewan highlighted the need for INEC to formally communicate with him as the Speaker, directing the withdrawal of certificates of return from certain members based on the court’s judgment. He stated that only members who had submitted their certificates of return and met all requirements were sworn in, based on the information provided to him by the House of Assembly’s documentation department.

The Speaker emphasized that he was awaiting the completion of procedural requirements, including the submission of certificates of return and CTC copies of judgments, before inaugurating the remaining members. He asserted that his actions were in line with due process and challenged anyone accusing him of contempt of court to take legal action.

Dewan reiterated that the decision was not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring that proper procedures were followed in accordance with the law.
