Italian Jailed 24 Years For Beating Physically Challenged Nigerian To Death

Filippo Ferlazzo, the Italian man who fatally assaulted Italy-based Nigerian Alika Ogorchukwu in July 2022, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

The 39-year-old Nigerian, who was tragically beaten to death in Civitanova Marche, Italy, in the Province of Macerata’s Marche Region, has now received justice.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), announced this in a statement released by NIDCOM spokesperson Gabriel Odu on Thursday.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed satisfaction with the justice served to Ferlazzo and commended the Nigerian Mission in Rome for their diligence in handling the case and other matters involving Nigerians.

“I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there has to be consequences for actions,” remarked Dabiri-Erewa.

The NIDCOM head also encouraged Nigerians living abroad to abide by the law, excel in their endeavors, and not forget their homeland, urging them to give back to their country.

She further advised Nigerians abroad to respect the law, strive for excellence in their pursuits, and remain connected to their roots by supporting their home country.

According to Italian authorities, Ogorchukwu was attacked while walking in broad daylight after he requested Ferlazzo’s fiancée to buy him a handkerchief. Utilizing Ogorchukwu’s crutches, the assailant brutally attacked him in front of multiple witnesses, some of whom recorded the incident on their smartphones.

On July 30, 2022, Ferlazzo was apprehended and arrested on charges of murdering Ogorchukwu and stealing his phone.
