“I am aware that there have been allegations on social media against the Commissioner of Police in Imo State but for this election, we are changing the commissioner of police in Imo,” the IGP said on Sunday on Channels Television’s People’s Townhall on Election Security.

There was widespread indignation from Organised Labour groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress, who accused Barde of being involved in the recent assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, last week.

Organised Labour had also given the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the police commissioner. They also pointed fingers at Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, for the attack on Ajaero, although the governor has stated that he had no involvement in the incident involving the labour leader.

The IGP also assured that the police have addressed all potential threats in the three states. He mentioned that the process of confiscating weapons will be conducted at regular intervals, both before, during, and after the elections.

Egbetokun emphasized that the police will respond appropriately to instances of vote buying and any other electoral offenses in accordance with the provisions of electoral laws. He added that officers’ allowances will be disbursed promptly.

Subsequently, a statement from the Force confirmed the redeployment of Barde.
