On Wednesday, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, officially declared the seats of 27 lawmakers vacant.

This action aligns with Section 109 (1) (g) and 2 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

Earlier in the week, the 27 lawmakers, led by Matthew Amaewhule, had defected to the APC.

In response to the defection, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement on Monday directing the Speaker to declare the seats vacant.

The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly initiate fresh elections in the constituencies of the 27 lawmakers.

The PDP argued that the defection led to the vacancy of the lawmakers’ seats, citing Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.
