FG Seeks Resolution With NLC, TUC Over Planned Protest

Reports from Television Continental (TVC) indicate that the high-stakes meeting is currently underway in Abuja, bringing together government representatives, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in a bid to address the grievances fueling the planned mass protest.
National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, had earlier announced the scheduled two-day protest as a means to amplify the voices of Nigerians grappling with unprecedented economic hardships.
However, the solidarity within the labour movement faced a setback as the TUC opted out of the planned protest, citing a lack of prior consultation by the NLC.
Moreover, the planned protest saw a further fracture with the withdrawal of 65 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) represented by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Forum.
The roots of discontent trace back to October 2, 2023, when labour leaders and government officials inked a Memorandum of Understanding following a comprehensive 16-point agreement. The accord aimed to address the multifaceted challenges plaguing the nation, from the removal of fuel subsidies to currency devaluation, inflation, and insecurity.
However, Ajaero, in a candid media briefing, lamented the Federal Government’s alleged failure to uphold its end of the bargain, fuelling disillusionment among the populace.
As negotiations unfold behind closed doors, the nation holds its breath, awaiting a resolution that could chart the course for economic stability and social cohesion in Nigeria.
