Ebonyi In Panic As Nurse Succumbs To Lassa Fever

A nurse treating patients at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, succumbed to an outbreak of Lassa fever.

According to a hospital insider, Nurse Ewogu Nkechi passed away over the weekend and was promptly interred following Lassa fever control protocols. Nkechi had been stationed in the hospital’s emergency department since December 2019. Responding to inquiries, Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Commissioner for Health in Ebonyi State, acknowledged the Lassa fever outbreak in the region. He assured that the state epidemiologist and other health personnel are actively addressing the situation to prevent further spread and ensure control measures are effectively implemented.

“In fact, there is an outbreak of Lassa Fever. It is not only in Ebonyi State. It affected other places more especially those areas that are prone to the outbreak. The state epidemiologist and other health team are on top of it to ensure its prevention and control,” he affirmed.
