CDS Explains Why Residents Of Okuama Community Cannot Access Their Homes

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has provided insight into why residents of Okuama in Delta State are currently unable to access their homes, days after the military intervened in the community.

This statement comes amidst allegations from the chairman of Okoloba community, Mr. Clement Koki, who claimed that Okuama residents hired mercenaries responsible for the killing of military personnel in the area.

Speaking on Arise TV, Gen Musa disclosed that troops are conducting a thorough cordon and search operation in Okuama to recover arms and ammunition belonging to the slain soldiers, which are yet to be found.

The tragic incident occurred after irate youths, suspected to be from Okuama, ambushed and killed military personnel, including a Commanding Officer and several soldiers, on March 14.

General Musa emphasized the necessity of the operation, stating that illegal activities such as crude oil theft have enabled the accumulation of weapons in the community.

He assured that once the operation is concluded, residents will regain access to their homes. Additionally, he defended the Nigerian Army’s decision to declare suspects wanted in connection to the killings, asserting that it is not an act of taking the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile, Okoloba community has accused Okuama of instigating the attack on military personnel. The chairman of Okoloba, Clement Koki, reiterated their stance, alleging that Okuama hired mercenaries to carry out the assault.

In response, the Delta Ijaw Advocacy Group (DIAG) refuted these claims, urging a thorough investigation into the incident. They condemned the killings of soldiers while dismissing allegations against certain individuals, stressing that such actions only fuel inter-communal crises.

Furthermore, former gubernatorial candidate Dr. Ovie Ughwanogho called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to address the state regarding the Okuama and Okoloba boundary dispute. He emphasized the importance of transparent communication from leadership during times of crisis to allay misconceptions and anxieties among the populace.
