The incident reportedly took place on April 3 at the New Market within the vicinity of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Adepoju allegedly deceived a phone vendor into surrendering a mobile phone valued at N180,000.

According to the prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, the defendant orchestrated the fraudulent transaction by executing a fake transfer for the mentioned amount, contravening Section 157 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002. Adepoju pleaded not guilty to the charges.
