After a meeting with OAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, and the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, the minister directed the suspension pending the conclusion of investigations into suspected illegal mining. The move aims to address reports of unregulated mining operations causing environmental degradation and economic disruptions.
The ministry deployed officials from the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency and Mines Inspectorate for on-the-spot assessments, leading to the suspension of all mining activities for further investigations. Some operators found engaging in illegal activities presented licenses and consent letters, prompting the need for authenticity verification.
Expressing gratitude for the audience, Prof. Bamire highlighted the university’s capacity in exploration and research within the mining sector. He emphasized plans to establish a research and training facility on mineral resources to support the university community and contribute to sector development.
The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned the university’s application for an exploration license, anticipating its approval to conduct exploration and assess mineral resource distribution and quality within the university environs and nationwide.
The suspension underscores the government’s commitment to addressing illegal mining activities and promoting responsible mining practices. It also highlights collaboration between government agencies and academic institutions to ensure sustainable resource management and environmental protection. Further developments are expected as investigations progress and measures are implemented to regulate mining activities effectively.
