Speaking at an event in Abuja during the unveiling of two books authored by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia, Professor Abdullahi Y. Shehu, Gowon lamented the emergence of Boko Haram as a significant challenge to Nigeria’s peace and development, following the devastation of the Civil War.

He remarked, “Boko Haram has been a threat, perhaps the major threat to the peace and development of Nigeria after the civil war.” Reflecting on the aftermath of the Civil War, Gowon expressed a fervent hope that Nigeria would not face a similar ordeal again. However, the emergence of Boko Haram shattered this hope.

Gowon stressed the importance of understanding the profound impact and detrimental effects of the insurgency on Nigeria. He emphasized that this understanding is essential for crafting innovative solutions to address the problem effectively.

Furthermore, Gowon acknowledged that various security challenges, such as banditry, kidnapping, and conflicts between farmers and herders, continue to undermine Nigeria’s stability and progress. He urged a comprehensive approach to addressing these multifaceted security threats plaguing the nation.
