Civil Society Groups To Stage Mass Protest Against Electricity Tariff Hike
Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) aligned under the Forum for Good Governance in Nigeria (FGGN) have announced plans for a mass protest against the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, over the recent increase in electricity tariffs. The FGGN, expressing concern over the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, criticized the Minister’s insistence on implementing the tariff hike, deeming it “insensitive.”…….READ ALSO Amidst Hardship, 65 Civil Society Groups Distance Themselves From NLC, TUC Strike
In a joint statement issued by the National Coordinator, Abraham Douglas, and Secretary, Bala Galadima Ikara, the group condemned the Minister’s stance and called for a focus on restoring consistent power supply to attract investors and stimulate economic growth. They argued that implementing a tariff hike during a period of developmental stagnation in the country was counterproductive.
The FGGN rebuked Adelabu’s assertion that discontinuing electricity subsidies would encourage investor participation, labeling it as “illusionary and unacceptable.” They urged the Minister to either resign or face continued civil society protests, citing dissatisfaction with his leadership and failure to fulfill electoral promises.
The impending mass protest underscores growing discontent among Nigerian citizens regarding the government’s handling of the electricity sector and its impact on their livelihoods. As CSOs mobilize to challenge the tariff hike, they advocate for policies that prioritize public welfare and economic development over short-term fiscal adjustments.
