Led by Ogugua Egwu, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and Chidi Igboji, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the workers expressed their discontent over the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
They marched to the NERC office at Nsugbe Street and the EEDC offices at Awolowo Street and Town Planning Road, adjacent to the Abakaliki Correctional Centre, brandishing placards and chanting slogans to denounce the tariff increase.
Some of the placards bore messages such as ‘NLC rejects electricity tariff hike,’ ‘Revert electricity tariff increase now,’ ‘Nigerian government: ease the burden on the poor,’ and ‘No to electricity tariff hike.’
Mr. Ogugua Egwu condemned the tariff increase as a heartless and unjust policy, insisting that it must be reversed to alleviate the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
“We are here to tell the world that their heartlessness, recklessness, and wickedness against ordinary Nigerians must be stopped. If it is not reversed by the government that has decided to suffer us, we must continue to picket all EEDC and NERC offices till the hike is reversed,” he declared.
Chidi Igboji, the TUC Chairman, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the tariff hike would further impoverish the masses.
“This increase is evil because it is meant to ensure that the poor masses will continue to be poor. What we are saying is that EEDC and NERC should let the poor breathe,” he emphasized.
