The allegations stem from his involvement in the implementation of the naira redesign policy during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Originally scheduled for April 30, 2024, the court date was postponed, and now Emefiele is slated to appear before Justice Maryann Anenih at the FCT High Court in Abuja this Wednesday. This marks the third set of charges against him, adding to his legal woes.

The EFCC has leveled four counts against Emefiele, accusing him of engaging in activities contrary to the law with intentions that could jeopardize public interest. Specifically, the charges allege unauthorized printing of currency and misappropriation of funds from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation during the implementation of the naira swap policy.

The charges against Emefiele outline instances where he allegedly disobeyed the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, by approving the printing of significant quantities of color-swapped Naira notes without the recommendation of the Central Bank’s Board and the strict approval of the President of Nigeria. These actions are alleged to have caused financial harm to the public.

This development follows previous legal confrontations for Emefiele. In November 2023, he faced a six-count charge of procurement fraud before Justice Hamza Muazu, to which he pleaded not guilty. Subsequently, in April 2024, he and another individual were charged with fraud involving substantial amounts in foreign and local currencies before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos.

The impending arraignment underscores the EFCC’s commitment to tackling financial crimes and holding individuals accountable for their actions. It also highlights the challenges faced by regulatory bodies in ensuring transparency and integrity within the financial sector.
