Dr. Nasir Raji-Mustapha, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), revealed this potential policy change during a press briefing at the organization’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
Raji-Mustapha explained that a new salary system, centered on worker productivity, is currently under development. Under this proposed system, employees at the same grade level may receive varying salaries, reflecting their individual contributions.
He emphasized that stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have been actively involved in the formulation of this new approach to compensation.
“We are in the process of developing a productivity-led wage system that will ensure that those who are productive are rewarded for their efforts irrespective of their grade level,” Raji-Mustapha stated. “Employees on the same salary scale can earn different wages.”
Highlighting the inclusive nature of the process, Raji-Mustapha noted that stakeholders, including labor unions, have been consulted throughout the development of the new system. He confirmed that the first phase of the study is complete, with further engagement planned to solicit input from various stakeholders before presenting the proposal to the federal government for consideration and possible adoption.
This potential shift in payment methodology comes amidst ongoing deliberations by a tripartite committee tasked with recommending a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, signaling a broader reassessment of labor remuneration practices in the country.
