Florida-Judge Hears Trump’s Motion To Dismiss Classified Documents-Charges (Details)
A Florida judge convened a hearing on Wednesday to consider former US President Donald Trump’s request to dismiss charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. The hearing took place in Fort Pierce, Florida, before District Judge Aileen Cannon, who had previously postponed Trump’s criminal trial indefinitely….CONTINUE READING
Trump, who aims to reclaim the White House in the upcoming November election, and his co-defendant, valet Walt Nauta, filed separate motions with Judge Cannon to have their case dismissed. In June, Trump pleaded not guilty in Florida to federal charges of unlawfully retaining national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements.
According to the indictment, Trump kept classified files, including records from the Pentagon, CIA, and National Security Agency, unsecured at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida and impeded official efforts to retrieve them. Trump, who is also on trial in New York for allegedly falsifying business records to pay hush money to a porn star, was not expected to attend Wednesday’s proceedings.
This latest dismissal motion is one of several Trump’s lawyers have unsuccessfully filed with Judge Cannon, seeking to have the charges dropped. This hearing marks the first in the case since Cannon postponed Trump’s trial on May 7, which had been slated to begin this month. The postponement represented a significant setback for special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the charges against Trump, making it unlikely that the case will be heard before the presidential election, now less than six months away.
Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, cited the extensive number of pre-trial motions as the reason the May 20 start date was not feasible. Trump’s legal team has aimed to delay his various criminal cases until after the election, hoping that a potential victory could lead to the dismissal of federal charges against him.
In addition to the New York and Florida cases, Trump faces charges in Washington and Georgia for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden, his likely opponent in November.
