Edo State Government Challenges IGP’s Suspension Of ESSN

The Edo State Government has contested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s suspension of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN).

Announced during an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) meeting ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election, the IGP’s decision to suspend the ESSN has been criticized by Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media Project to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Osagie argues that the IGP lacks constitutional authority to suspend a state-established security body, which was created by the Edo State House of Assembly.

In response, Governor Obaseki has directed ESSN officials to go on leave from September 11 to September 23, 2024, to ensure the peace and order during the election period.
