Ambassadorial Vacancies: PDP, LP Slam Tinubu For Delayed Appointments And Diplomatic Crisis
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to appoint new ambassadors more than a year after recalling former envoys. The party described this delay as a sign of the “ineptitude...READ MORE…
and indifference” of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
This criticism follows the recall of 83 ambassadors in September 2023, a decision made in light of a reevaluation of Nigeria’s foreign policy under President Tinubu. These ambassadors, a mix of career and non-career diplomats, were instructed to return by October 31, 2023, in order to realign Nigeria’s international relations.
Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Yusuf Tuggar emphasized that the recall was made at the President’s discretion as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s global presence. However, the lack of immediate replacements has left a diplomatic gap, prompting widespread concern.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor spoke to ireporteronline on Wednesday, calling the situation “unfortunate” and expressing that it should be a major concern for all Nigerians. He said, “Every time we have to comment on Tinubu’s performance, it’s with a sense of melancholy. It’s not just about criticizing him; it’s about the dysfunctional system he has created for Nigeria.”
He continued, “A man who can’t even appoint a single spokesperson and needs three is clearly clueless. The fact that he hasn’t appointed ambassadors speaks volumes about the ineffectiveness and apathy he’s brought into governance.”
Osadolor suggested that President Tinubu may be disconnected from the realities of the situation, stating, “It’s unfortunate that the people around him may have isolated him from what’s happening. The President may not even be aware that ambassadors haven’t been appointed yet. He seems to be living in a world of his own, unaware of the pressing issues.”
The Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, also weighed in, criticizing the government’s lack of a clear foreign policy vision. He stated, “The absence of ambassadors means consuls cannot engage with foreign ministers, and it undermines Nigeria’s ability to present its position internationally. For a government that claims to be seeking foreign investments, this is a significant failure.”
Ifoh questioned whether the government lacked qualified individuals to fill these important roles. “Why is it that there’s a shortage of diplomats or politicians who could represent Nigeria abroad? This is a political failure, not just an administrative one.”
Both parties have called for President Tinubu to urgently fulfill his responsibilities and address this diplomatic void
