Clark To Tinubu: Nigerians Will Question Your Role In Wike’s Actions
Elder statesman and Convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Edwin Clark, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s silence amidst the political turmoil in Rivers State. The crisis revolves around the defection of former Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 27 pro-Wike lawmakers in the…READ MORE…
Rivers State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement on Monday, Clark alleged that the lawmakers, by law, forfeited their seats upon defection and accused them of perjury due to conflicting claims in court filings after their switch on December 11, 2023.
He explained that in an earlier case before Justice Omotosho, the lawmakers failed to disclose their defection, but in a later filing before Justice Donatus Okorowo on December 13, 2024, they admitted leaving the PDP. According to Clark, these inconsistencies nullify their legal arguments.
“Defectors Lost Their Seats by Law”
Clark emphasized that Nigerian law requires defecting lawmakers to prove a division within their original party to retain their seats. Without such evidence, their positions are automatically void.
“Martins Amaewhule and his colleagues admitted in court that they defected from the PDP to the APC on December 11, 2023. By law, they lost their seats on that date and cannot bring any court action on behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” he stated.
He further asserted that the case before Justice Omotosho, which led to a judgment allegedly favorable to the lawmakers, was fraudulent and invalid.
“Wike Undermines Rivers State Government”
Clark accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the defected lawmakers of attempting to destabilize the administration of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He claimed Wike had repeatedly violated the Constitution without facing repercussions from the President.
“Wike seeks to bring down Governor Fubara’s government at all costs, despite the Governor’s innocence. His actions, coupled with those of Martins Amaewhule and others, give the impression that certain individuals are above the law,” Clark said.
Tinubu’s Silence Criticized
Clark condemned President Tinubu for failing to address Wike’s alleged constitutional breaches, stating that Nigerians would eventually hold the President accountable.
“We have appealed to President Tinubu multiple times to rein in Wike and prevent him from violating the Constitution, but the President remains indifferent. Wike has shown blatant disregard for the rule of law while serving in Tinubu’s government. One day, patriotic Nigerians will question why the President allowed him to act with impunity,” Clark warned.
The statement concluded with a call for immediate action to uphold constitutional governance in Rivers State and prevent further political unrest.
