part of a reassessment of Nigeria’s foreign policy direction under Tinubu’s leadership. The recalled envoys, a mix of career and non-career diplomats, were instructed to return to Nigeria by October 31, 2023, signaling a strategic shift in the nation’s global diplomatic engagements.
Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Yusuf Tuggar defended the recall as a presidential prerogative aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s international representation. However, delays in appointing replacements have left a diplomatic void, drawing criticism and raising concerns over the nation’s global standing. While interim measures, including appointing 12 consuls-general and five chargés d’affaires to 14 countries, were implemented in April 2024, these roles lack the authority to engage effectively at high diplomatic levels. Stakeholders and retired diplomats have called for reforms to address funding and staffing issues, emphasizing the urgency of appointing resident ambassadors to strengthen Nigeria’s international relations.
