Blinken Confirms Lebanon Ceasefire Holding Despite Rising Tensions

“The ceasefire is holding, and we are actively addressing any concerns about alleged violations using the agreed mechanisms,” Blinken stated during a NATO meeting in Brussels.

Both Israel and Hezbollah have faced accusations of breaching the truce, which was initiated last Wednesday to halt a conflict that caused mass casualties and displacement on both sides.

Blinken highlighted the commitment from both parties to maintain the truce, saying, “Israel and Hezbollah, through the Lebanese government, fundamentally desire to uphold the ceasefire. However, vigilance is essential to ensure compliance.”

A committee, chaired by the US and including France, UN peacekeepers, Israel, and Lebanon, monitors the situation to address and de-escalate violations promptly.

“The mechanism we established with France to oversee and ensure the ceasefire’s implementation is functioning well,” Blinken affirmed. “Any concerns of violations are brought to us, and we act to engage the parties involved.”

The tensions escalated in late September when Israel intensified its campaign in southern Lebanon following Hezbollah’s cross-border actions in support of its ally Hamas, after the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by Hamas.
